Oshcon 2012

Got down to Oshcon again this year.  Most of our core nerd group were unable to make it, however Josh and I were able to play 1 game of 40k and 1 game of Dust Warfare.  I'll be quick because I forgot to take pictures and its been over a week so I've forgotten the fine details.

We played 1500 points, I tried the Blood Angels out for the first time in 6th, and Josh took a Tau force with Space Marine allies.  I mostly wanted to try out jump troops, bikes, and the death company in order to see how well they did in 6th.  This was one of those games where I don't think I'll be taking a lot out of it.  I never got to see how bikes and death company work and I only had limited use of my jump troops.  It was one of those games where my dice were either super hot, or ice cold.  I either made every single save, and hit with every shot, or I failed every save and failed to wound.

The game was roll dice and tie and Josh had turn 1.  Right away he immobilized my vindicator (making it useless for the rest of the game), killed most of my devastator squad, and blew up my rhino (which had 9 death company and my reclusiarch in it).  After the rhino blew, 3 of the guys inside also died, this basically ended the game for me.  By my turn 1 most of my long range fire was gone and my death company had to walk across the whole board into the face of a bunch of fire warriors and broadsides...ugly.  That being said, the game did get close and I really want to try this same list out again (although I'm getting rid of the rhino for a drop pod...fuck those things).

As the game went on I pushed forward, shot at some shit (probably wasted firepower on his terminators  which didn't do a lot accept eat bullets), and sped forward with my bikes providing cover to my death company.  I felt that my 5 toughness bikers with their 3+ armor, 5+ jink save and feel no pain thanks to the sanguinary priest riding with them would be able to do some serious work...however they failed to wound anything during their shooting phase and then failed pretty much every armor, jink and feel no pain save during Josh's next shooting phase and were wiped to the man.

My vanguard vets failed to come in during the next turn, and my assault marines missed a very, very crucial charge which left my dick in the wind.  Josh was a good little fish commie and blasted my squads to dust.  When my vets did come it, they made a game of it.  I only had 5, but thanks to a great deep strike roll and their ability to charge off the deep strike, I was able to kill both of Josh's troop choices on his objective.  All of a sudden in turn 4, it looked like Josh was going to lose the game.  I had 3 points for 1 objective (thanks to my trusty sniper scouts) and he had 2, 1 for first blood and 1 for slaying my warlord.

By the end of turn 5, I only had 1 vanguard vet left and instead of going after his warlord (which probably would have been the smart choice) I grabbed control of his aegis defense line gun and shot at his dudes with it just to be spiteful (it did nothing).  In the end it didn't matter, instead of winning on turn 5 it went to turn 6 and my ever faithful scouts failed me in a big way.  Despite Josh firing everything he had at them, they were holding strong, I still had 2 left on the objective and josh was moving his troops up just in hopes of getting a tie with line breaker.  At the end of his shooting phase my scouts had a take a leader ship test...I got box cars.  Ok, no bigs...they could rally on my turn and then walk back on to the objective...I then rolled box cars again and they ran off the table.  Wasn't anything I could do after that.

A really, really fun game.  Despite getting fucked early I nearly pulled it off.  In the future I'm going to need to try me out some of them allies or fortifications.  I also want to make an all tesla necron list, or a giant horde necron foot list...hmmmm?  I have to say, most of the games I've played in 6th ed have been very close and very fun.

We also played a game of Dust Warfare...and we played it way wrong!  I do however want to play it again because it seemed like it could be a blast.  I'm considering getting some more figs for that game, but I think I'm going to wait a bit longer.  Hopefully I'll get to play it more than once a year in 2013.
