Wraith and game 2!

I got to play a second game of the 6th edition rules with Adam.  I won't go into much detail here because he took more pictures then I did and he also took about 18 pages of notes so his bat rep had better be off the fucking chain.  I took a similar list to the one I played with Karl.  The only things I changed up were I took two Doom Scythes instead of 1 with a Night Scythe.  This meant I was completely on foot (even with my Deathmarks).  I also dumped the Spyders and Scarabs in order to try out a Triarch Stalker.  This list was super shooty, but unfortunately,  lacked any maneuverability besides my Tomb Blades and flyers.

Adam took his Black Templars which he focused into a very shooty army also.  While I was able to pump out more shots then him, he had the advantaged of longer range weaponry.  He had the Aegis defense line and a skyfire gun that made short work of my flyers.  I made some bad target priority choices and had punched my ticket to Brown Town pretty early on in this game.  By the end of it I had a squad of 10 Warriors and nothing else.  I'm pretty sure Adam still had 80% of his forces.  Things were fairly even until about turn 3 or 4 when I lost an assault and got swept up by his Emperor's Champion and then had my Deathmark unit get smoked.  Without those two units I lost a lot of shooting and never stood a chance at denting Adams massed wall of shooting.  I was far too aggressive with an army that did not have the firepower to back up my advance.

My Overlord peeking out at the dreadnought that would soon vaporize his face.
A few things that I learned concerning the units I picked.  I'm pretty much set on the troops I take (1 of each type of Immortal and a Warrior squad of around 10) and I don't see that changing.  Flyers have not impressed me a lot, I think I would prefer spending less points and getting the Night Scythe for transportation (I needed some transportation this game) over the Doom Scythe's giant cost and giant gun.  Tomb Blades are cool and can be useful (I think I used them poorly this game) but I don't think I will bother upgrading them anymore.  100 points for 5 with no upgrades is the way to go I think (I'm also going to build the other 5 I have with Tesla instead of the more expensive blast weapon option) Cheap, cheap cheap.  The Stalker was cool, but for 150 I'm not sure if its worth it.  I think I will save that thing for larger games.  Dumping the Stalker, the two Doom Scythes and un-grading the Tomb Blades saves me almost 600 points off of that 1500 point list.  I will say that vehicles are a bit more survivable then everyone has made them out to be.  Sure, they are not nearly as good as they were in last edition but they do not explode the second they move onto the board like everyone wants you to believe.

Now that I've gotten some games in and tried out some units that I never had a chance to use in the last edition (I still need to give Praetorians a try) I'm going to bring back some of the things I know worked well in 5th.  Annihilation Barge, Douche Canoe, maybe the Monolith, and of course Wraiths.

Speaking of Wraiths, I painted mine.  I've used the patina and burnished gold colors from my vehicles for these guys.  As I've used this technique more I have modified it.  Originally I just used a patina wash, then I added dry brushing some bronze over that.  Now I've taken it another step and hit the patina areas with a yellow glaze.  It helps the effect blend together.  The patina on my first models was just a bleeding effect and now its full blown tarnished.  The model doesn't stand out as well as I would like (its pretty dark) but it fits with my army and I'm pretty happy with it overall.

Next up I'm working on my flyers.  I've got a good start on them so it won't take me too long...I hope.

Boo.
